Passionate allegiances to competing theoretical camps have stifled dialogue among today's literary critics, asserts Francoise Lionnet. Discussing a number of postcolonial narratives by women from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, she offers a comparative feminist approach that can provide common ground for debates on such issues as multiculturalism, universalism, and relativism.

Lionnet uses the concept of metissage, or cultural mixing, in her readings of a rich array of Francophone and Anglophone texts-by Michelle Cliff from Jamaica, Suzanne Dracius-Pinalie from Martinique, Ananda Devi from Mauritius, Maryse Conde and Myriam Warner-Vieyra from Guadeloupe, Gayl Jones from the United States, Bessie Head from Botswana, Nawal El Saadawi from Egypt, and Leila Sebbar from Algeria and France. Focusing on themes of exile and displacement and on narrative treatments of culturally sanctioned excision, polygamy, and murder, Lionnet examines the psychological and social mechanisms that allow individuals to negotiate conflicting cultural influences. In her view, these writers reject the opposition between self and other and base their self-portrayals on a metissage of forms and influences.

Lionnet's perspective has much to offer critics and theorists, whether they are interested in First or Third World contexts, American or French critical perspectives, essentialist or poststructuralist epistemologies.

Bodenheimer revisits pivotal episodes in Mary Ann Evans's life and career, including the "Holy War" through which she asserted her youthful religious skepticism; her decision to elope with the married writer George Henry Lewes; and her marriage with John Cross after Lewes's death. Bodenheimer also discusses the rumor campaign that led to the discovery that "George Eliot" was a woman, and she traces the trajectory of Eliot's impassioned conflict between her ambition and her womanhood.

In this lively and insightful book, Peter Cryle reconsiders canonical French erotic literature of the last three hundred years, particularly that of the eighteenth century. Through close readings of works by Sade, Crbillon, Nerciat, and Restif, among others, he explores the dynamics of canon formation as he shows that classical erotic narratives--while they are certainly all about sex--are more about its form than its experience.

Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma PDF By author Dominick LaCapra last download was at 2017-01-02 14:46:26. This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma book. Defying comprehension, the tragic history of the Holocaust has been alternately repressed and canonized in postmodern Western culture. Recently our interpretation of the Holocaust has been the center of bitter controversies, from debates over Paul de Man's collaborationist journalism and Martin Heidegger's Nazi past to attempts by some historians to downplay the Holocaust's significance. A major voice in current historiographical discussions, Dominick LaCapra brings a new clarity to these issues as he examines the intersections between historical events and the theory through which we struggle to understand them.

In a series of essays-three published here for the first time-LaCapra explores the problems faced by historians, critics, and thinkers who attempt to grasp the Holocaust. He considers the role of canon formation and the dynamic of revisionist historiography, as well as critically analyzing responses to the discovery of de Man's wartime writings. He also discusses Heidegger's involvement with National Socialism, and he sheds light on postmodernist obsessions with such concepts as loss, agora, dispossession, deferred meaning, and the sublime. Throughout, LaCapra demonstrates that psychoanalysis is not merely a psychology of the individual but that its concepts have sociocultural dimensions and can help us perceive the relationship between the present and the past. Many of our efforts to comprehend the Holocaust, he shows, continue to suffer from the traumatizing effects of its events and require a "working through" of that trauma if we are to gain a more profound understanding of the meaning of the Holocaust.

Download now for free or you can read online Child Growth and Nutrition in Developing Countries : Priorities for Action book. What can be done for the estimated 190 million of the world's children under age five who are chronically undernourished? This book presents a broad, multidisciplinary approach to eliminating child malnutrition in developing countries. Exploring causes, consequences, and solutions, the volume gives operationally useful information on cost-effective ways to reach, hear, and respond to the needs of vast numbers of impoverished families, especially mothers, with diverse cultural values and practices. The focus is on what in fact works, what does not, and why.
Nineteen experts offer current knowledge and perspectives from nutrition, public health, epidemiology, agricultural and consumer economics, anthropology, child development, rural sociology, and community development. Combining academic perspectives with practical experience, they spell out ways of implementing simple nutritional/growth-promoting strategies that are financially and technically feasible.
Technology can and does play an important role, the authors believe, but it has proved to be ineffective, by itself, in addressing protein-energy malnutrition. The volume concludes that effective and sustainable solutions to malnutrition must be found through careful analysis of the behavior of individuals, households, and communities - preferably with community involvement in the analysis - to identify the ways in which community-based or external interventions can be designed or redesigned to improve nutrition.

Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed PDF By author James W. Felt last download was at 2018-08-05 11:06:54. This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed book. Written for the general reader, this book provides in highly accessible language a brief metaphysical defense of freedom. James W. Felt invites his readers on a philosophic journey explore the questions: Are we truly free in our actions, and if so, can we make sense of this fact? Developing an approach that owes most to the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941), Felt explains why it is reasonable to affirm that we are free in making personal decisions. He then reviews several senses of "freedom" and common arguments for and against affirming it, including those for determinism and compatibilism. He leads the reader to an uncommon understanding of the nature of both time and personal causal activity (agency) and, in the high metaphysical reconception of time and of agency, establishes that the affirmation of personal freedom makes rational sense - indeed more sense than its denial. In his concluding pages, he illustrates the significance of this new perspective of time, agency, and freedom by applying it to the problem of evil in a created world and to our conception of the future and of the self. Conceding that his view is not a popular one, Felt describes the path he traces as "tortuous and sometimes steep. But the prospect at the end, which may be a new view of yourself and of the adventure of life, may make the climb worthwhile."

Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX PDF By author Charlotte Witt last download was at 2017-08-06 30:44:51. This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX book. Substance and Essence in Aristotle is a close study of Aristotle's most profound - and perplexing - treatise: Books VII-IX of the Metaphysics. Charlotte Witt extracts from this text a coherent and provocative view about sensible substance by focusing on Aristotle's account of form or essence. After exploring the context in which Aristotle's discussion of sensible substance takes place, Witt turns to his analysis of essence. Arguing against the received interpretation, according to which essences are classificatory, she maintains that a substance's essence is what causes it to exist. In addition, Witt challenges the orthodox view that Aristotelian essences are species-essences, defending instead the controversial position that they are individual essences. Finally, Witt compares Aristotelian essentialism to contemporary essentialist theories, focusing in particular on Saul Kripke's work.

Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England PDF By author Deborah Willis last download was at 2018-07-03 58:51:42. This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England book. Why were women far more likely than men to be executed for witchcraft in the early modern period? Questioning approaches that focus narrowly on the male role in witch-hunting in England and Scotland, Deborah Willis examines the fact that women were also frequently the accusers.

Willis draws on the strengths of feminist, new historicist, and psychoanalytic criticism and on such primary sources as legal documents, pamphlet literature, religious tracts, and stage plays. Both the witch and her female accuser, Willis concludes, were engaged in a complex, intricate struggle for survival and empowerment in a patriarchal culture, and they stood in uneasy relation to definitions of female identity that rewarded nurturing behavior.

Malevolent Nurture disentangles popular images of the witch from those endorsed by male elites. Among villagers, the witch was most typically imagined as a malevolent mother, while elites preferred to view her as a betraying servant of Satan. Analyzing King James VI and I's involvement in the North Berwick witchcraft trials, Willis shows how his elite atittudes were nevertheless influenced by his relationships with his brith mother, Mary Queen of Scots, and another maternal figure, Queen Elizabeth I.

Willis also shows that Shakespeare, in Richard III, Macbeth, and Henry VI, and other middle-class playwrights incorporated the beliefs of the ruling class and villagers alike in their representations of witches.

Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military PDF By author Stephen Peter Rosen last download was at 2018-07-28 52:24:50. This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military book. How and when do military innovations take place? Do they proceed differently during times of peace and times of war? In Winning the Next War, Stephen Peter Rosen argues that armies and navies are not forever doomed to "fight the last war." Rather, they are able to respond to shifts in the international strategic situation. He also discusses the changing relationship between the civilian innovator and the military bureaucrat.

In peacetime, Rosen finds, innovation has been the product of analysis and the politics of military promotion, in a process that has slowly but successfully built military capabilities critical to American military success. In wartime, by contrast, innovation has been constrained by the fog of war and the urgency of combat needs. Rosen draws his principal evidence from U.S. military policy between 1905 and 1960, though he also discusses the British army's experience with the battle tank during World War I.

This ambitious book explores the relationship between the Western "scientific revolution" that began with Galileo in the early seventeenth century and the Renaissance "artistic revolution" inaugurated by Giotto three hundred years earlier. The fruit of many years of thought and research, it demonstrates the crucial role that Italian Renaissance painting, sculpture, and architecture played in what we call "modern science." Samuel Y. Edgerton, Jr., shows that rather than being symptomatic in nature, the arts served as a catalyst for the transformation in perception which occurred in the West in the fourteenth century. According to Edgerton, the new way in which "reality" was represented, through the use of the unique Renaissance tools of perspective and chiaroscuro, set the stage for modern scientific practice.

The dispute that amused and excited the English world of letters from 1690 until the 1730s was, Levine shows, an installment in the long-standing debate about the relationship of classical learning to modern life.

The importance of the polis in Homeric literature is most evident in the Iliad, a poem concerned in large measure with the holy city of Troy. Stephen Scully here deepens our understanding of both the poetic and the social significance of the city in Homer through a close analysis of the poem's formulaic language. Drawing on scholarship in literary studies, archaeology, and comparative religion, Scully demonstrates that it is the urban setting of the Iliad, as well as the collision of the individual fates of its characters, which generates its most profound tragic themes.

This book is good alternative for Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy. Download now for free or you can read online Renaissance Debates on Rhetoric book. Throughout the European Renaissance, authors famous and obscure debated the nature, goals, and value of rhetoric. In a host of treatises, handbooks, letters, and orations, written in both Latin and the vernacular, they attempted to assess the central role that rhetoric clearly played in their culture. Was rhetoric a valuable tool of legitimation for rulers or a dangerous instrument of resistance to political and religious authority? Would its employment maintain the social hierarchy or foster social mobility? Was rhetoric merely the art of lies or was it a means to arrive at the only form of truth available to human beings? In this fascinating volume, Wayne A. Rebhorn enables modern-day readers to follow Renaissance thinkers as they struggle with these and other crucial questions about rhetoric.Arranged chronologically, the twenty-five selections in this anthology, most of which have never before appeared in English, include key texts by Petrarch, Valla, Erasmus, Vives, Melanchthon, Ramus, Wilson, Amyot, and Bacon. All the selections have been fully annotated and have headnotes providing essential background information. In addition, the volume features a biographical glossary of frequently mentioned historical and mythological figures, a comprehensive index, and a detailed bibliography.

A Choice "Outstanding Academic Book for 1996"While drawing on work in feminism, queer theory, and cultural history, Dandies and Desert Saints challenges scholars to rethink simplistic notions of Victorian manhood. James Eli Adams examines masculine identity in Victorian literature from Thomas Carlyle through Oscar Wilde, analyzing authors who identify the age's ideal of manhood as the power of self-discipline. What distinguishes Adams's book from others in the recent explosion of interest in masculinity is his refusal to approach masculinity primarily in terms of "patriarchy" or "phallogocentrism" or within the binary of homosexualities and heterosexualities.
