The Republic of Letters : A Cultural History of the French Enlightenment The Republic of Letters : A Cultural History of the French Enlightenment PDF By author Dena Goodman last download was at 2017-10-11 03:43:52. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online The Republic of Letters : A Cultural History of the French Enlightenment book. In the first major reinterpretation of the French Enlightenment in twenty years, Dena Goodman moves beyond the traditional approach to the Enlightenment as a chapter in Western intellectual history and examines its deeper significance as cultural history. She finds the very epicenter of the Enlightenment in a community of discourse known as the Republic of Letters, where salons governed by women advanced the Enlightenment project "to change the common way of thinking." Goodman details the history of the Republic of Letters in the Parisian salons, where men and women, philosophes and salonnieres, together not only introduced reciprocity into intellectual life through the practices of letter writing and polite conversation but also developed a republican model of government that was to challenge the monarchy. Providing a new understanding of women's importance in the Enlightenment, Goodman demonstrates that in the Republic of Letters men and women played complementary - and unequal - roles. Salonnieres governed the Republic of Letters by enforcing rules of polite conversation that made possible a discourse characterized by liberty and civility. Goodman chronicles the story of the Republic of Letters from its earliest formation through major periods of change: the production of the Encyclopedia, the proliferation of a print culture that widened circles of readership beyond the control of salon governance, and the early years of the French Revolution. Although the legacy of the Republic of Letters remained a force in French cultural and political life, in the 1780s men formed new intellectual institutions that asserted their ability to govern themselves and that marginalized women. TheRepublic of Letters introduces provocative explanations both for the failure of the Enlightenment and for the role of the Enlightenment in the French Revolution.

Rethinking Home Economics : Women and the History of a Profession Rethinking Home Economics : Women and the History of a Profession PDF By author Sarah Stage last download was at 2018-07-20 44:26:52. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Rethinking Home Economics : Women and the History of a Profession book. Until recently, historians tended to dismiss home economics as little more than a conspiracy to keep women in the kitchen. This landmark volume initiates collaboration among home economists, family and consumer science professionals, and women's historians. What knits the essays together is a willingness to revisit the subject of home economics with neither indictment nor apology. It includes significant new work that places home economics in the twentieth century within the context of the development of women's professions.

Rethinking Home Economics documents the evolution of a profession from the home economics movement launched by Ellen Richards in the early twentieth century to the modern field renamed Family and Consumer Sciences in 1994. The essays in this volume show the range of activities pursued under the rubric of home economics, from dietetics and parenting, teaching and cooperative extension work, to test kitchen and product development. Exploration of the ways in which gender, race, and class influenced women's options in colleges and universities, hospitals, business, and industry, as well as government has provided a greater understanding of the obstacles women encountered and the strategies they used to gain legitimacy as the field developed.

How can the global environment be safeguarded in the absence of a world government? In the vanguard of efforts to address this critical question, Oran R. Young's analysis invokes the distinction between "governance," a social function involving the management of interdependent individuals or groups, and "government," a set of formal organizations that makes and enforces rules.

Woman has been defined in classic political theory as elusive yet dangerous, by her nature fundamentally destructive to public life. In the view of Linda M. G. Zerilli, however, gender relations shape the very grammar of citizenship. In deeply textured interpretations of Rousseau, Burke, and Mill, Zerilli recasts our understanding of woman as the agent of social chaos and makes a major advance for feminist political theory.

"And, sovereign, having captured a shaman in battle, we asked him: what kind of man are you and do you have kinsmen? And he said: I am the best man of the Shoromboiskii clan and I have four sons. And so we kept him as hostage." For over five hundred years the Russians have been wondering what kind of people their Arctic and sub-Arctic hostages were. "They have mouths between their shoulders and eyes in their chests, " reported a fifteenth-century tale. "They rove around, live of their own free will, and beat the Russian people, " complained a seventeenth-century Cossack. "Their actions are exceedingly rude. They do not take off their hats and do not bow to each other, " huffed an eighteenth-century scholar. They are "children of nature" and "guardians of ecological balance, " rhapsodized early nineteenth-century and late twentieth-century romantics. Even the bolsheviks, who categorized the circumpolar foragers as authentic proletarians, " were repeatedly puzzled by the "peoples ... from the late Neolithic period who, by virtue of their extreme backwardness, cannot keep up either economically or culturally with the furious speed of the emerging socialist society." Whether described as brutes, aliens, or endangered indigenous populations, the so-called small peoples of the north have consistently remained a point of contrast for speculations on Russian identity and a convenient testing ground for policies and images that grew out of these speculations. In a vividly rendered history of circumpolar peoples in the Russian empire - and in the Russian mind - Yuri Slezkine offers the first in-depth interpretation of this relationship. No other book in any language links the history of a colonize non-Russian people to the full sweep of Russian intellectual and cultural history. Enhancing his account with vintage prints and photographs, Slezkine reenacts the procession of Russian fur traders, missionaries, tsarist bureaucrats, radical intellectuals, professional ethnographer

Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy PDF By author John R. Wallach last download was at 2018-04-12 36:28:51. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Athenian Political Thought and the Reconstitution of American Democracy book. In the contemporary United States the image and experience of Athenian democracy has been appropriated to justify a profoundly conservative political and educational agenda. Such is the conviction expressed in this provocative book, which is certain to arouse widespread comment and discussion.

What does it mean to be a citizen in a democracy? Indeed, how do we educate for democracy? These questions are addressed here by thirteen historians, classicists, and political theorists, who critically examine ancient Greek history and institutions, texts, and ideas in light of today's political practices and values. They do not idealize ancient Greek democracy. Rather, they use it, with all its faults, as a basis for measuring the strengths and shortcomings of American democracy. In the hands of the authors, ancient Greek sources become partners in an educational dialogue about democracy's past, one that goads us to think about the limitations of democracy's present and to imagine enriched possibilities for its future.

The authors are diverse in their opinions and in their political and moral commitments. But they share the view that insulating American democracy from radical criticism encourages a dangerous complacency that Athenian political thought can disrupt.

Postcolonial Representations : Women, Literature, Identity Postcolonial Representations : Women, Literature, Identity PDF By author Francoise Lionnet last download was at 2018-08-21 23:52:55. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Postcolonial Representations : Women, Literature, Identity book. Passionate allegiances to competing theoretical camps have stifled dialogue among today's literary critics, asserts Francoise Lionnet. Discussing a number of postcolonial narratives by women from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, she offers a comparative feminist approach that can provide common ground for debates on such issues as multiculturalism, universalism, and relativism.

Lionnet uses the concept of metissage, or cultural mixing, in her readings of a rich array of Francophone and Anglophone texts-by Michelle Cliff from Jamaica, Suzanne Dracius-Pinalie from Martinique, Ananda Devi from Mauritius, Maryse Conde and Myriam Warner-Vieyra from Guadeloupe, Gayl Jones from the United States, Bessie Head from Botswana, Nawal El Saadawi from Egypt, and Leila Sebbar from Algeria and France. Focusing on themes of exile and displacement and on narrative treatments of culturally sanctioned excision, polygamy, and murder, Lionnet examines the psychological and social mechanisms that allow individuals to negotiate conflicting cultural influences. In her view, these writers reject the opposition between self and other and base their self-portrayals on a metissage of forms and influences.

Lionnet's perspective has much to offer critics and theorists, whether they are interested in First or Third World contexts, American or French critical perspectives, essentialist or poststructuralist epistemologies.

Through close readings of works by Sade, Crbillon, Nerciat, and Restif, among others, he explores the dynamics of canon formation as he shows that classical erotic narratives--while they are certainly all about sex--are more about its form than its experience.

Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma PDF By author Dominick LaCapra last download was at 2018-03-27 31:15:49. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Representing the Holocaust : History, Theory, Trauma book. Defying comprehension, the tragic history of the Holocaust has been alternately repressed and canonized in postmodern Western culture. Recently our interpretation of the Holocaust has been the center of bitter controversies, from debates over Paul de Man's collaborationist journalism and Martin Heidegger's Nazi past to attempts by some historians to downplay the Holocaust's significance. A major voice in current historiographical discussions, Dominick LaCapra brings a new clarity to these issues as he examines the intersections between historical events and the theory through which we struggle to understand them.

In a series of essays-three published here for the first time-LaCapra explores the problems faced by historians, critics, and thinkers who attempt to grasp the Holocaust. He considers the role of canon formation and the dynamic of revisionist historiography, as well as critically analyzing responses to the discovery of de Man's wartime writings. He also discusses Heidegger's involvement with National Socialism, and he sheds light on postmodernist obsessions with such concepts as loss, agora, dispossession, deferred meaning, and the sublime. Throughout, LaCapra demonstrates that psychoanalysis is not merely a psychology of the individual but that its concepts have sociocultural dimensions and can help us perceive the relationship between the present and the past. Many of our efforts to comprehend the Holocaust, he shows, continue to suffer from the traumatizing effects of its events and require a "working through" of that trauma if we are to gain a more profound understanding of the meaning of the Holocaust.

Child Growth and Nutrition in Developing Countries : Priorities for Action Child Growth and Nutrition in Developing Countries : Priorities for Action PDF By author Per Pinstrup-Andersen last download was at 2017-01-03 01:36:10. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Child Growth and Nutrition in Developing Countries : Priorities for Action book. What can be done for the estimated 190 million of the world's children under age five who are chronically undernourished? This book presents a broad, multidisciplinary approach to eliminating child malnutrition in developing countries. Exploring causes, consequences, and solutions, the volume gives operationally useful information on cost-effective ways to reach, hear, and respond to the needs of vast numbers of impoverished families, especially mothers, with diverse cultural values and practices. The focus is on what in fact works, what does not, and why.
Nineteen experts offer current knowledge and perspectives from nutrition, public health, epidemiology, agricultural and consumer economics, anthropology, child development, rural sociology, and community development. Combining academic perspectives with practical experience, they spell out ways of implementing simple nutritional/growth-promoting strategies that are financially and technically feasible.
Technology can and does play an important role, the authors believe, but it has proved to be ineffective, by itself, in addressing protein-energy malnutrition. The volume concludes that effective and sustainable solutions to malnutrition must be found through careful analysis of the behavior of individuals, households, and communities - preferably with community involvement in the analysis - to identify the ways in which community-based or external interventions can be designed or redesigned to improve nutrition.

Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed PDF By author James W. Felt last download was at 2017-04-03 12:03:43. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Making Sense of Your Freedom : Philosophy for the Perplexed book. Written for the general reader, this book provides in highly accessible language a brief metaphysical defense of freedom. James W. Felt invites his readers on a philosophic journey explore the questions: Are we truly free in our actions, and if so, can we make sense of this fact? Developing an approach that owes most to the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941), Felt explains why it is reasonable to affirm that we are free in making personal decisions. He then reviews several senses of "freedom" and common arguments for and against affirming it, including those for determinism and compatibilism. He leads the reader to an uncommon understanding of the nature of both time and personal causal activity (agency) and, in the high metaphysical reconception of time and of agency, establishes that the affirmation of personal freedom makes rational sense - indeed more sense than its denial. In his concluding pages, he illustrates the significance of this new perspective of time, agency, and freedom by applying it to the problem of evil in a created world and to our conception of the future and of the self. Conceding that his view is not a popular one, Felt describes the path he traces as "tortuous and sometimes steep. But the prospect at the end, which may be a new view of yourself and of the adventure of life, may make the climb worthwhile."

Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX PDF By author Charlotte Witt last download was at 2017-01-24 57:39:44. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Substance and Essence in Aristotle : An Interpretation of "Metaphysics" VII-IX book. Substance and Essence in Aristotle is a close study of Aristotle's most profound - and perplexing - treatise: Books VII-IX of the Metaphysics. Charlotte Witt extracts from this text a coherent and provocative view about sensible substance by focusing on Aristotle's account of form or essence. After exploring the context in which Aristotle's discussion of sensible substance takes place, Witt turns to his analysis of essence. Arguing against the received interpretation, according to which essences are classificatory, she maintains that a substance's essence is what causes it to exist. In addition, Witt challenges the orthodox view that Aristotelian essences are species-essences, defending instead the controversial position that they are individual essences. Finally, Witt compares Aristotelian essentialism to contemporary essentialist theories, focusing in particular on Saul Kripke's work.

Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England PDF By author Deborah Willis last download was at 2017-02-08 52:22:32. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Malevolent Nurture : Witch-Hunting and Maternal Power in Early Modern England book. Why were women far more likely than men to be executed for witchcraft in the early modern period? Questioning approaches that focus narrowly on the male role in witch-hunting in England and Scotland, Deborah Willis examines the fact that women were also frequently the accusers.

Willis draws on the strengths of feminist, new historicist, and psychoanalytic criticism and on such primary sources as legal documents, pamphlet literature, religious tracts, and stage plays. Both the witch and her female accuser, Willis concludes, were engaged in a complex, intricate struggle for survival and empowerment in a patriarchal culture, and they stood in uneasy relation to definitions of female identity that rewarded nurturing behavior.

Malevolent Nurture disentangles popular images of the witch from those endorsed by male elites. Among villagers, the witch was most typically imagined as a malevolent mother, while elites preferred to view her as a betraying servant of Satan. Analyzing King James VI and I's involvement in the North Berwick witchcraft trials, Willis shows how his elite atittudes were nevertheless influenced by his relationships with his brith mother, Mary Queen of Scots, and another maternal figure, Queen Elizabeth I.

Willis also shows that Shakespeare, in Richard III, Macbeth, and Henry VI, and other middle-class playwrights incorporated the beliefs of the ruling class and villagers alike in their representations of witches.

Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military PDF By author Stephen Peter Rosen last download was at 2017-04-05 07:40:07. This book is good alternative for Memorabilia. Download now for free or you can read online Winning the Next War : Innovation and the Modern Military book. How and when do military innovations take place? Do they proceed differently during times of peace and times of war? In Winning the Next War, Stephen Peter Rosen argues that armies and navies are not forever doomed to "fight the last war." Rather, they are able to respond to shifts in the international strategic situation. He also discusses the changing relationship between the civilian innovator and the military bureaucrat.

In peacetime, Rosen finds, innovation has been the product of analysis and the politics of military promotion, in a process that has slowly but successfully built military capabilities critical to American military success. In wartime, by contrast, innovation has been constrained by the fog of war and the urgency of combat needs. Rosen draws his principal evidence from U.S. military policy between 1905 and 1960, though he also discusses the British army's experience with the battle tank during World War I.

This ambitious book explores the relationship between the Western "scientific revolution" that began with Galileo in the early seventeenth century and the Renaissance "artistic revolution" inaugurated by Giotto three hundred years earlier. The fruit of many years of thought and research, it demonstrates the crucial role that Italian Renaissance painting, sculpture, and architecture played in what we call "modern science." Samuel Y. Edgerton, Jr., shows that rather than being symptomatic in nature, the arts served as a catalyst for the transformation in perception which occurred in the West in the fourteenth century. According to Edgerton, the new way in which "reality" was represented, through the use of the unique Renaissance tools of perspective and chiaroscuro, set the stage for modern scientific practice.
